Understanding the Causes Of Your Muscle Strain

You may experience a lumbar muscle strain when the muscle fibers abnormally stretch or tear. Lumber sprains occur because of when the ligaments (bands of tissue that hold bone together) are unusually stretched. This can be the result of gradual overuse or sudden injury.*

Some symptoms include:

Non-surgical low back, cervical and thoracic pain usually affects the central or para-spinal soft tissue without radiating into the arms, around the chest or down the legs. On the contrary, pain radiating from the spine into the extremities or chest wall implies structural pinching of the nerves in the spine that might require a surgical opinion if the situation fails to improve within days to weeks with non-surgical symptomatic treatment.

Other symptoms include*:

  • Stiffness in the low back area, restricting range of motion
  • Inability to maintain normal posture due to stiffness and/or pain
  • Muscle spasms either with activity or at rest
  • Pain that persists for a maximum over 10 days

Diagnosing Your Muscle Strain

Diagnostic testing is really only necessary when the pain has been present for more than two weeks and has not improved as you expected.  If your symptoms are presistent, you may be ordered one of the following tests:*

  • X-Ray
  • MRI
  • CT Scan
  • Electromyography

Treatment Options For Muscle Strain

Your muscle strain can usually be treated with some of our non-invasive treatments, which may include:

  • Medication – You can be prescribed medication depending on the severity of the injury.*
  • Physical Therapy – It may be possible that you have torn a muscle in your spinal area. We can help rehabilitate your muscle back to health with a number of controlled exercises after you are cleared to do so.*

Having muscle strain stay chronic can be frustrating, and NY Spine is more than happy to help you get your muscle back to its original quality. If you give us a call today, you’ll be able to receive a consultation at one of our convenient locations.  We look forward to meeting you.*

*The effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment will vary by patient and condition. New York Spine Institute does not guarantee certain results.
