Understanding The Need For Robotic Spinal Surgery

If you are experiencing chronic back pain that is unresponsive to non-surgical treatment, you may be a candidate for minimally invasive spine surgery. Many surgical procedures benefit from this type of procedure including:

Robot-guided spine surgery is also appropriate for individuals seeking a spinal fusion or revision surgery from failed prior surgery.

Its advanced technology allows the NYSI surgeons the ability to perform less invasive surgical procedures with smaller incisions, less operative bleeding, faster recovery time and shorter hospital stays. Due to their precision and efficiency, robotic surgical procedures can be performed quickly! This means that both surgeons and patients are exposed to much less radiation than conventional surgery.

Diagnosing Your Back Pain

Patients who suffer from debilitating back pain, limited range of motion and degenerative conditions often require spinal surgery to permanently resolve their symptoms. In many of these cases, a robotic approach can be used to improve the safety and efficacy of these procedures. Our doctors at NYSI commonly performs robotic spine surgery to treat:

  • Scoliosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated disc
  • Kyphosis
  • Spondylolisthesis

Although robotic surgical techniques are ideal in many instances, they aren’t appropriate for all patients. During your initial consultation, your doctor will discuss all of your surgical options with you and help you determine which approach is in your best interest.

Robotic Spine Surgery Treatment Options

Depending on the severity, there are a variety of options to deal with your pain. Minor fractures may require wearing a cervical collar until neck pain is healed. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, can be used to decrease swelling and relieve pain.

The patient may be a candidate for surgery if:

  • Conservative therapy is not helping
  • Presence of progressive neurological symptoms involving arms and/or legs
  • Difficulty with balance or walking
  • In otherwise good health

There are several different surgical procedures that can be utilized, the choice of which is influenced by the specifics of each case. In a percentage of patients, spinal instability may require that spinal fusion be performed, a decision that is generally determined prior to surgery. This procedure may assist in strengthening and stabilizing the spine and may thereby help to alleviate severe and chronic neck pain.

Anterior Cervical Corpectomy

This surgery removes damaged or diseased vertebral bone and surrounding discs. It relieves neck arm and leg symptoms caused by pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding nerves. An anterior cervical corpectomy is performed for patients who have experienced degenerative changes in the cervical spine that have resulted in the formation of bone spurs (bony projections) and/or herniated discs.

Following your procedure you will have a custom plan to get you back to full strength. Your NY Spine doctor will help determine when the patient can resume normal activities. Some patients may benefit from one on one rehabilitation or physical therapy.  It is expected to have some pain after surgery, make sure to communicate with your doctor if it doesn’t get better over time.

Anterior Cervical Disc Replacement

In some extreme cases, a patient may need to have a disc replaced. This surgery requires  removing a damaged or degenerated cervical disc and replacing it with an artificial disc device. Cervical discs are the cushions or shock absorbers between the bones (vertebra) of the neck (cervical spine).
