Scoliosis is defined as a medical term in which one’s spine is curved from side to side. As a result, the spine of that individual may look like a “C” or an “S,” rather than an I or a lower case “L.” There are various treatment options available, such as observation and physical therapy. Spinal surgery is also a treatment option, as it is to potentially help in straightening out the spine.

Understanding the Causes Of Your Scoliosis

Of the general population, scoliosis affects everyone, ranging from children to middle aged adults. There is even a chance that scoliosis runs through an entire family. Individuals who have a family history of scoliosis are very prone to developing this diagnosis. Several other causes may include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, spinal muscular atrophy, and tumors.*

There are several factors that may contribute to scoliosis, which may include*:

  • Age
  • Smoking cigarettes
  • Presence of other health/medical problems

Diagnosing Your Scoliosis

By taking a physical examination, the curve of your spine is usually defined in terms of severity by the number of degrees. Generally, if your curve is greater than 10 degrees, then it is defined as a “Perfect diagnosis” of scoliosis. Anywhere between 25 and 30 degrees would consider that curve to be “significant.” Finally, any curve that extends between 45 and 50 degrees is not only considered to be “severe,” but it will require a substantial amount of aggressive treatment.*

Your spine specialist will perform a physical exam first to note your back pain history, they will note posture, range of motion, and other observable physical conditions. In some cases, you may need an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan to diagnose the cause of your Sciatica. Treatment Options For Scoliosis

There are three primary options for treating those diagnosed with scoliosis.

  • Observation: Mainly appropriate for smaller curves, which are at a lower risk for progression, and many not cause as much problems during adulthood. However, if your child has been diagnosed with a curve between 25 and 40 degrees, and are between 15 and 17 years old, then observation is appropriate.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy is strongly encouraged for mobility and movement purposes, as well as to decrease pain and restore function in recently repaired areas. By engaging in active and passive stretching, exercise programs, and through the use of modalities, patients can be taught proper body mechanics, postural awareness, and home exercises to provide maintenance of their current condition.*
  • Surgery: Mostly recommended for adults whose spinal curve is greater than 50 degrees. The most frequent procedure performed involves posterior spinal fusion with instrumentation and bone grafting, also known as “Posterior approach.” Other common procedures include anterior approach, decompressive laminectomy, and minimally invasive surgery. Based off your consultation, your doctor could recommend cold compression for a few days, and heating pads after that. Although having sciatica might prompt you to rest and take it easy, being mobile is very important. Sitting still could cause further irritation of the Sciatic Nerve, lower back stretches and staying in motion can help reduce any inflammation.*

*It is important to note that not always will results be guaranteed by New York Spine Institute; all effectiveness of the diagnosis and treatment will accord to patient and the condition.
