Understanding the Causes Of Your Spinal Compression Fracture

A spinal compression fracture typically develops as a result of an ongoing spinal or genetic health condition that has impacted a person throughout their life. There are cases of sudden compression fractures, which may result from an accident, but many cases of compression fractures happen gradually with no symptoms.*

Health conditions that may cause or are risk factors for compression fractures can include*:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Osteogenesis imperfecta
  • Infections
  • Lytic lesions from primary or metastatic tumors

Diagnosing Your Spinal Compression Fracture

Unfortunately, it can be difficult to determine if you have had a spinal compression fracture. It can reveal itself over a period of time as someone grows older because the conditions resulting from it can cause shorter height and aching pain. Until it fully develops, it can be difficult to determine if you are suffering from a spinal compression fracture.*

NY Spine will explore your back in a few different ways if we suspect you may have a compression fracture. These include:

  • Spinal radiographs
  • Imaging services such as X-Rays, MRIs, and CT scans.

Treatment Options For Spinal Compression Fracture

In some cases, spinal compression fractures can be treatable. The New York Spine Institute has state-of-the-art treatments to offer you comfort during your healing process.*

Some of the offer the non-surgical methods that can be used to help you recover:

  • If the fracture is mild or stabilized, a back brace will be able to help maintain the shape of your spine and keep your bones in the correct position as they work to heal themselves.
  • To deal with pain management, you may be prescribed medications because a spinal fracture can make moving around aggravating and uncomfortable.

Moderate to severe cases of compression fractures, however, may require surgery to treat them properly, then using the back brace and/or pain management as you recover from the injury. Many times, this will take extensive work to help heal your spine, but rest assured, we are extremely careful with how we treat our patients’ spines. The New York Spine Institute makes sure everyone in our care is treated by the best spine doctors in the area who know the in-and-out of spinal health, and we make sure you feel comfortable during recovery*
