Here in the United States there are millions of people who are affected by scoliosis, which is a side to side curvature of the spine, unlike the natural front to back curves. Those patients who have insignificant curves of the spine, typically require no treatments, however, those with large curves can ultimately suffer from a myriad of health issues caused by the scoliosis which can include fatigue, muscle pain, back pain, spinal arthritis, or even breathing issues.

For top-rated scoliosis treatment, be sure to visit the NYSI.  Our spine and back specialists skillfully treat the varying degrees and types of scoliosis, like the degenerative or common idiopathic types. Because we take a comprehensive approach to treating scoliosis we are recognized as a world class scoliosis center.  We offer extensive care for both children and adults, as we understand it impacts individuals of all ages. *

The treatment spine doctors render to our St. James patients suffering with scoliosis depends upon the severity of your spine’s curvature. In some cases, back surgeons may find it necessary to rely upon surgery.  Our highly-qualified neck surgeons at our nationally ranked center, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, possess years of knowledge and overall experience.* The back surgeons here at the NYSI have offered lectures around the world on the topic of scoliosis and have authored a variety of scoliosis treatment publications. PHYSICAL THERAPY

It is important for patients to understand the significance that physical therapy plays in their overall rehabilitation.  Even our St. James patients who have undergone the most minimally invasive surgeries require effective physical therapy to aid in their movement and mobility, decrease pain, restore function, and to limit disability for those patients with injuries or impairments.*  Physical therapy is a critical component of rehabilitation especially for patients that have lifestyles that add additional strain to their neck and back. If you’ve experienced a neck or back injury, then the renowned back specialists here at the NYSI are the ideal team of doctors for you.

Our licensed physical therapist, Michael Friar, D.P.T., along with our team of dedicated physical therapists are committed to providing patients the highest quality physical therapy treatments. Patients are provided with specific instructions on proper stretching, exercise, and manual therapy. In order to improve our patients’ conditions, we work alongside of them to help them understand the importance of body mechanics, postural awareness, and exercises that can be done at home that not only help with their healing process but assist in preventing reinjury.  Our team utilizes cardio and weight machines to target strength and endurance training for all our St. James patients who are undergoing physical therapy. We are steadfast in providing the best treatment options to all our patients along with setting practical goals for patients to achieve.

IMAGING SERVICES FOR ST. JAMES PATIENTS

Here at the NYSI our state of the art radiology department includes a high field short bore 1.5T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system.  This system is effective in diagnosing many conditions and supports a wide range of clinical applications including, but not limited to, MRIs of the spine, brain, abdomen, pelvis, shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, wrist, hand, ankle and foot*. The MRI system is every bit safe as it is noninvasive, and is an innovative tool used by our doctors for providing comfortable treatment for our patients.  This new GE 1.5T MRI system provides our physicians with high quality, detailed pictures of anatomy and pathology they require in their efforts to help evaluate a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders.

The MRI system utilizes magnetism and radio waves to produce detailed images used to evaluate various parts of the body and determine the presence of certain diseases which may not be visible with other imaging methods such as x-ray, ultrasound or CT (Computed Tomography).*

We are also equipped with a digital radiography department that is used to capture digital images that allow the radiologist to analyze bone and soft tissue anatomy for diagnosis.  Further to our equipment, we also have Long Length Imaging (LLI) for proper scoliosis assessment as well.

*The effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment will vary by patient and condition. New York Spine Institute does not guarantee certain results.
