They offer patients, during the consultation phase, insight needed to help them understand back and neck pain treatment options that are recommended.  After your consultation is completed, a neck specialist will perform a complete examination and analysis and put together pertinent information needed as a result of these tests, to help in the design of your personalized treatment plan.

Understanding patient symptoms and medical histories help doctors in performing valuable assessments.  Tests performed during this initial phase will provide needed medical facts that will aid in the development of individual treatment plans. Upon completion of an assessment and necessary testing, your doctor will discuss all your treatment options ranging from physical therapy and bracing to surgical intervention and everything in between.  Most cases involve non-surgical treatments for your back or neck pain. PHYSICAL THERAPY

When a treatment plan involves surgery, it is important for those patients undergoing the surgery to recognize the important role physical therapy and rehabilitation will play in their post-surgery protocol and their overall recovery.  Surgeries of all types typically require physical therapy, even the most minimally invasive surgeries. PT assists most patients with movement and mobility, decreases pain, restores function, and limits disability in individuals with injuries or impairments. *

Michael Friar, D.P.T., leads our physical therapy department here at the NYSI in Woodmere and treats patients with all types of physical therapies.  Some of these treatment plans will include proper stretching, exercise, and manual therapy. The overall goal of the physical therapy is to help patients improve their health, by familiarizing them with their own body mechanics and postural awareness, as well as offering instruction on how to perform home exercises.  Home exercises are beneficial to the healing process and help patients to avoid reinjury.

PT treatments vary but most include a combination of cardio and weight machines that target strength and endurance training.  A licensed physical therapist will evaluate and assess you before prescribing a personalized PT plan. The assessment is mandatory and assists doctors in determining current functioning levels, pain thresholds and physical restrictions.  Upon completion of an evaluation, Michael Friar, D.P.T. and your personal doctor will design and develop a PT treatment plan that focuses on your personal health goals.
