By looking at a patients history and x-rays of the spine, a scoliosis specialist can help make a diagnosis of flat back syndrome. Typically, patients will experience difficulty standing up straight and may frequently experience back or leg pain.*
Initial treatment for flat back syndrome can start with pain management and physical therapy sessions. You could be recommended for aerobic fitness, weight bearing exercise or core muscle strengthening. Medication may also be recommended to help manage the symptoms and pain resulting from this type of scoliosis.*
Some patients that are diagnosed with flat back syndrome may ultimately require surgery. The goal of this surgery performed by a scoliosis or spine surgeon will be to improve the patient’s pain and spinal alignment and to decrease stress on the supporting muscles in the back, hips and legs.*
