PREMIER SCOLIOSIS TREATMENT CENTER OF SMITHTOWN

Here at the NYSI we are aware that scoliosis affects millions of people in the United States.  Scoliosis which is a side to side curvature of the spine, unlike the natural front to back curves of the spine, affects individuals of all ages.  When small insignificant curves are present they typically do not cause any serious issues. However, when larger curves in the spine are present they will typically contribute to a wide range of health issues, which may include but are not limited to, fatigue, muscle pain, back pain, spinal arthritis, or even breathing issues.

At the NYSI, our spine and back specialists treat many types of scoliosis, including both degenerative and common idiopathic scoliosis.  As a result of our specialized comprehensive approach to treating this debilitating disease, our team of doctors has been recognized as one of the best all round treatment centers for scoliosis in the U.S.   We understand that scoliosis affects patients of all ages and that our personalized treatment plans can benefit our many patients. *

Treatment for scoliosis is dependent upon the severity of your spine’s curvature. Advanced scoliosis cases may require back surgeons located at our nationally ranked NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases,* to render surgical procedures for some patients.  Educated lectures on scoliosis are delivered worldwide by our back surgeons who have also authored many scoliosis treatment publications as well. For more details, refer to our Spine 101 section.

DIAGNOSIS OF YOUR BACK PAIN

The back doctors here at New York Spine Institute and our certified spine specialists understand the overall complexities of the spine and are committed to providing personalized back pain or neck pain treatments for patients of all ages.  Patients must first undergo an initial thorough exam to help doctors identify the source of their pain. Doctors will follow up by determining the extent of your pain and gathering all the pertinent info they need to present a full diagnosis in advance of prescribing treatment options.

Physicians will focus on your described symptoms and test results gathered when making their diagnosis. There are a number of factors that play a significant role in prescribing appropriate treatment options that can vary from bracing to surgical intervention for all our Smithtown patients, but our spine doctors prefer non-surgical back pain treatment methods.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

All of the neck and back specialists here at the NYSI are highly trained in the newest technologies, medical diagnostics and a variety of medical treatment methods that are affiliated with back and neck pain related issues.

We offer our Smithtown patients treatment options, which include:• Injection therapies• Radiofrequency procedures• Spinal cord stimulation• Intrathecal device implementation• State-of-the-art fluoroscopy and endoscopy for great accuracy and precision• Ketamine infusion therapy for treatment of neuropathic pain syndromes such as CRPS.

Spinal Conditions we can help treat include:

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Surgeries of all types, whether mildly invasive or advanced surgery, require physical therapy as part of a patient’s rehabilitation process.  Back or neck surgery patients who follow a physical therapy regimen can experience increased movement and mobility, decreased pain and restored function, and for those patients with injuries and impairments, their disability levels may very well be limited * when they add physical therapy to their personalized treatment plan.  Patients benefit from physical therapy, especially those who have daily lifestyles that tend to put additional strain on their necks or backs.

Here at the NYSI Michael Friar, D.P.T., who is our licensed physical therapist, is dedicated to working one on one with patients and to providing personalized physical therapy treatments to all our Smithtown patients.  His team of physical therapy specialists provide instruction on proper stretching, exercise, and manual therapy and educate all our Smithtown patients on the importance of body mechanics, postural awareness, and exercises that they should perform at home in their efforts to avoid further injury.

The PT team when prescribing personalized physical therapy regimens, combines both cardio and weight machines to target strength and endurance training for all our Smithtown patients.  Before beginning a PT regimen, however, patients must be evaluated by one of our licensed physical therapists who will determine pain thresholds, existing functioning levels, and physical restrictions.  Michael Friar, D.P.T. along with our certified team of PT specialists, work together in creating and prescribing a customized treatment plan for you and will set practical goals for you to achieve.

IMAGING SERVICES FOR SMITHTOWN PATIENTS

A fully equipped radiology department here at the NYSI, that includes Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which is safe and noninvasive and is used for diagnosing a wide range of conditions provides doctors with the resources and tools they need to perform accurate diagnoses.  Diagnostics allow radiologists to analyze bone and soft tissue anatomy images when creating a personalized care and treatment plan.

The innovative diagnostic imaging equipment includes: Digital Radiography (DX) x-rays and a high field short bore 1.5T MRI system that supports a wide range of clinical applications including but not limited to MRI’s of the Spine, Brain, Abdomen, Pelvis, Shoulder, Knee, Hip, Elbow, Wrist, Hand, Ankle and Foot.*

The innovative 1.5T MRI system provides our physicians with high quality, detailed pictures they use when evaluating many different musculoskeletal disorders.  The MRI system produces detailed images by using magnetism and radio waves. The images produced are then used by our spine doctors and other physicians to evaluate various parts of the body and determine the presence of diseases or disorders.  The MRI system is far more effective than typical x-rays, ultrasounds or CT (Computed Tomography).*

Our spine surgeons and dedicated neck doctors want all our Smithtown patients to feel comfortable at our facility.  We provide a truly relaxing and calming environment and offer patients a choice of music, earplugs and even a comfortable sleeping mask that helps them to feel completely at home.

We are also equipped with state of the art Long Length Imaging (LLI) for proper scoliosis assessments.

*The effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment will vary by patient and condition. New York Spine Institute does not guarantee certain results.
