PREMIER SCOLIOSIS TREATMENT CENTER OF STONY BROOK
We are all aware of the millions of people in the United States who are affected by scoliosis, the side to side curvature of the spine, unlike the natural front to back curves of the spine. Scoliosis affects individuals of all ages and though small curves typically do not cause any serious issues, larger curves tend to contribute to a wide range of health issues, which may include but are not limited to, fatigue, muscle pain, back pain, spinal arthritis, or even breathing issues.
The spine and back specialists at the NYSI treat many types of scoliosis including degenerative and common idiopathic scoliosis. Our team of doctors has been recognized as one of the best all round treatment centers for scoliosis in the U.S. because of our specialized comprehensive approach to treating the debilitating disease. Our doctors understand that scoliosis affects patients of all ages and are committed to providing personalized treatment plans that can benefit our many patients. *
The treatments for scoliosis are highly dependent upon the severity of the patient’s spine’s curvature. There are some advanced scoliosis cases that may require back surgeons located at our nationally ranked NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases,* to perform surgical procedures for some of our patients. Delivering educated lectures on scoliosis worldwide, many of our back surgeons have also authored scoliosis treatment publications as well. For more details, refer to our Spine 101 section.

“If I can help one person and say you’ll make it through this, go to them, they will help you. I would help you to let you see what it is like on the other side of the fence when someone goes through so much injury and trauma and then in turn, feels like I do. If you can just meet one doctor, please meet Dr. de Moura.”

“I was having severe chronic back pain daily. This went on for almost fifteen years. As soon as I met Dr. Macagno I said, “that’s the guy.” I eventually had a spinal fusion L4/5 and S1. This was a ten-hour procedure. I exceeded both Dr. Macagno and the hospital staff expectations. Instead of walking a few steps, I easily walked the full length of the hospital halls and climbed stairs almost immediately after surgery. I am so happy to have met Dr. Macagno. I sing his praises every day and I always post on social media about how amazing I am doing every year on the anniversary of my surgery.”

Dr.v is a great doctor !!! From day one he has accessed and managed my pain while acknowledging me not only as his patient but as a person as well. Every Dr office should have a Dr. V and the world for patients with pain would be a much better place. I haven’t had a Dr this great since Dr de Mourra who did my surgery In 2013. Thank you Dr de Mourra for referring me to a pain management dr who really cares for my needs as his patient. It has been a tough road . I can now honestly say the road I travel now as a pain patient is much smoother and manageable. Thank you Dr v and NYU.
Regardless of the type of surgery patients may have, whether mildly invasive or advanced surgery, physical therapy is a must do as part of a patient’s rehabilitation process. Back or neck surgery patients who are put on a physical therapy regimen can experience, over time, increased movement and mobility, decreased pain and restored function, and for those patients with injuries and impairments, their disability levels may very well be limited * when a personalized PT regimen is added to their treatment plan. Patients of all ages benefit from physical therapy, especially those who have daily lifestyles that tend to put additional strain on their necks or backs.
Michael Friar, D.P.T., the licensed physical therapist here at the NYSI, works one on one with our Stony Brook patients with their personalized physical therapy treatment plans. The lineup of physical therapy specialists who work with Michael Friar provide instruction to patients on proper stretching, exercise, and manual therapy and educate all our Stony Brook patients on the importance of body mechanics, postural awareness, and exercises that should be performed at home in their efforts to avoid reinjury.
The PT team will combine cardio and weight machines to target strength and endurance training for all our Stony Brook patients and, before starting a patient’s PT regimen, will evaluate the patient and determine pain thresholds, existing functioning levels, and physical restrictions. Michael Friar, D.P.T. and his team of certified PT specialists, work together in creating and prescribing a customized treatment plan for you and will set practical goals for you to achieve.
IMAGING SERVICES FOR STONY BROOK PATIENTS
The NYSI has a fully equipped radiology department. The department is equipped with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) which is safe and noninvasive. The MRI is used for diagnosing a variety of conditions and provides doctors with the resources and tools they need to perform accurate diagnoses. The diagnostics afford radiologists information needed to analyze bone and soft tissue anatomy images when creating a personalized care and treatment plan.
Our diagnostic imaging equipment includes: Digital Radiography (DX) x-rays and a high field short bore 1.5T MRI system that supports a wide range of clinical applications including but not limited to MRI’s of the Spine, Brain, Abdomen, Pelvis, Shoulder, Knee, Hip, Elbow, Wrist, Hand, Ankle and Foot.*
A state of the art 1.5T MRI system provides high quality, detailed pictures doctors can use when evaluating many different musculoskeletal disorders. The MRI system produces its detailed images by combining magnetism and radio waves. The images produced are then used by our spine doctors and other physicians to perform an accurate evaluation on the various parts of the body and determine the presence of a wide range of diseases or disorders. The MRI system is far more effective and more reliable than typical x-rays, ultrasounds or CT (Computed Tomography).*
The NYSI spine surgeons and certified neck doctors want all our Stony Brook patients to feel comfortable and at home in our facility. We provide a truly relaxing and calming environment and offer patients a choice of music, earplugs and a comfortable sleeping mask.
Our radiology department is also equipped with Long Length Imaging (LLI) used for proper scoliosis assessments.
*The effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment will vary by patient and condition. New York Spine Institute does not guarantee certain results.
