What Is a Foraminotomy?
A foraminotomy is a spinal decompression surgery that enlarges the neural foramen—the small openings where nerve roots exit the spinal canal. When these passageways become narrowed by arthritis, disc herniation, or spinal stenosis, nerves can become compressed, leading to:
- Radiating arm or leg pain (sciatica)
- Numbness or tingling in the limbs
- Muscle weakness or instability
- Trouble walking, lifting, or using your hands
During the procedure, a surgeon removes the bone or tissue pressing on the nerve, relieving inflammation and allowing the nerve to function normally again.
