What Are Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty?
Both kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are outpatient spine procedures used to treat compression fractures in the vertebrae—especially those caused by osteoporosis, spinal injury, or degenerative bone loss.
- Kyphoplasty: A tiny balloon is inserted and inflated to create space in the collapsed vertebra. Bone cement is then injected to stabilize and restore vertebral height.
- Vertebroplasty: Bone cement is injected directly into the fracture to reinforce the vertebra and prevent further collapse.
These procedures are performed using small incisions and image-guided tools, allowing for a quicker, safer recovery compared to traditional surgery.
