What Are Spinal Tumors?
Spinal tumors are abnormal growths that occur in or around the spinal column. They may be:
- Benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous)
- Primary, originating in the spine, or secondary, spreading from cancers like breast, lung, or prostate
- Found inside the spinal cord (intramedullary), inside the canal but outside the cord (intradural-extramedullary), or outside the canal in the vertebrae (extradural)
Tumors can appear in any region of the spine—cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), lumbar (lower back), or sacral (pelvis)—and often affect nerves, spinal stability, and overall function.
