Understanding The Causes Of  Your Arthritis

Cartilage is a connective tissue found in many areas of the body. Cartilage is a tough but flexible tissue that is the main type of connective tissue in the body. Around 65–80% of cartilage is water, although that decreases in older people, and the rest is a gel-like substance called the ‘matrix’ that gives it its form and function. Arthritis is most commonly seen in adults over the age of 65, however, it may also develop in children, teens, and young adults. This inflammation of the joints disorder is more common in women than men, also in people who are overweight.

Diagnosing Your Arthritis

Pain is very subjective with Arthritis and can vary person to person. It is an inflammation of the joints.that can identified with over 100 different types. It can affect one or multiple joints. Two of the most common types are osteoarthritis (OA)  and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The symptoms of the disease typically show up gradually but it is possible it may appear suddenly. Some risk factors may increase an individual’s chances of getting arthritis or even make it  worse. By changing the risk factors you can control, you can decrease your risk of getting arthritis or making arthritis worse. Arthritis has various risk factors some you can control and others you cannot.

Controllable Risk Factors:

  • Being overweight - Healthy eating and physical activity can help you lose weight and stay at a healthy weight. This will take stress of your joints.
  • Joint injury/repetitive stress - protect joints from injury and perform special exercises that can be given to you through our services.
  • Smoking - smoking cigarettes can increases a person’s risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and can make the disease worse.* Smoking can also discourage staying physically active which is important for symptom management.
  • Occupation - Physical jobs may require repetitive movements that may affect your knee and hip joints. Be aware of your physical limitations and make sure your work site is safe for the physical work you do.

Uncontrollable Factors:

  • Age - risk increases as you get older.
  • Gender - women are far more likely than men to be diagnosed.
  • Genetics - People born with specific genes are more likely to develop certain types of arthritis.

Meeting with one of our professional staff is the a step in the right direction toward diagnosing your arthritis. One of our doctors will perform a physical examine in order to determine if there’s fluid surrounding the joints where you experience discomfort. Extracting and analyzing inflammation levels in your blood and joint fluids can help your doctor determine what kind of arthritis you have.

“If I can help one person and say you’ll make it through this, go to them, they will help you. I would help you to let you see what it is like on the other side of the fence when someone goes through so much injury and trauma and then in turn, feels like I do. If you can just meet one doctor, please meet Dr. de Moura.”

“I was having severe chronic back pain daily. This went on for almost fifteen years. As soon as I met Dr. Macagno I said, “that’s the guy.” I eventually had a spinal fusion L4/5 and S1. This was a ten-hour procedure. I exceeded both Dr. Macagno and the hospital staff expectations. Instead of walking a few steps, I easily walked the full length of the hospital halls and climbed stairs almost immediately after surgery. I am so happy to have met Dr. Macagno. I sing his praises every day and I always post on social media about how amazing I am doing every year on the anniversary of my surgery.”

Dr.v is a great doctor !!! From day one he has accessed and managed my pain while acknowledging me not only as his patient but as a person as well. Every Dr office should have a Dr. V and the world for patients with pain would be a much better place. I haven’t had a Dr this great since Dr de Mourra who did my surgery In 2013. Thank you Dr de Mourra for referring me to a pain management dr who really cares for my needs as his patient. It has been a tough road . I can now honestly say the road I travel now as a pain patient is much smoother and manageable. Thank you Dr v and NYU.
