UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES OF YOUR SPONDYLOSIS
Spondylosis is a condition involving changes to the bones, discs, and joints in the neck and back region. This is a degenerative disease caused by the normal wear and tear of aging. Spondylosis is very cause and effect. Aging impacts the rate of symptoms; however, the way you’re aging can lead to issues regarding the condition down the road.
Risk factors for Spondylosis include:
*genetics- you can be predisposed to this condition if members of your family have suffered from excessive joint and disc wear.
*smoking- cigarette smoking can decrease the amount of water between your discs, which can lead to an increased rate of degeneration.
*spinal injury- any traumatic injuries to parts of the spine can cause intervertebral discs to herniate.
Over 80% of people over the age of 40 have evidence of spondylosis, making it a very common condition for individuals typically seeing symptoms between the ages of 20 and 50 years old.
When you meet with one of the NYSI doctors, you will receive a physical examination to check your range of motion, any tender spots you may have, and note any abnormalities in the curvature of your spine. Bringing a medical history is beneficial in noting if it runs in your family and any previous spinal injuries you may have suffered from. A doctor will thoroughly evaluate pain and symptoms. There’s also various imaging services we offer to diagnose Spondylosis. Alexandra Inglima our head MRI technician will make you feel calm and comfortable during one of our services. Our imaging services include:
CT Scan: Our doctors are able to note any narrowing of the spinal canal and view the spine in greater detail.
MRI: Gives doctors a clearer view the vertebrae, joints, and nerves. This imaging service will be able to note any pinched nerves.
X-Ray: Note any bone spurs and narrowing of intervertebral disc spaces.
Being properly diagnosed is essential in improving one’s quality of life. Contact one of our NYSI doctors to receive proper diagnosis and appropriate proceedings heading forward.

“If I can help one person and say you’ll make it through this, go to them, they will help you. I would help you to let you see what it is like on the other side of the fence when someone goes through so much injury and trauma and then in turn, feels like I do. If you can just meet one doctor, please meet Dr. de Moura.”

“I was having severe chronic back pain daily. This went on for almost fifteen years. As soon as I met Dr. Macagno I said, “that’s the guy.” I eventually had a spinal fusion L4/5 and S1. This was a ten-hour procedure. I exceeded both Dr. Macagno and the hospital staff expectations. Instead of walking a few steps, I easily walked the full length of the hospital halls and climbed stairs almost immediately after surgery. I am so happy to have met Dr. Macagno. I sing his praises every day and I always post on social media about how amazing I am doing every year on the anniversary of my surgery.”

“My reason for writing to you is to express my appreciation for the concern and encouragement you gave me following my surgery. Your visits to me early in the morning and your careful supervision of my recovery were a strong indication of the genuine concern you have for me. During my later years, I’ve had numerous associations with doctors and a variety of experiences. I can honestly say that I could not have received better treatment than I received from you.”

Dr.v is a great doctor !!! From day one he has accessed and managed my pain while acknowledging me not only as his patient but as a person as well. Every Dr office should have a Dr. V and the world for patients with pain would be a much better place. I haven’t had a Dr this great since Dr de Mourra who did my surgery In 2013. Thank you Dr de Mourra for referring me to a pain management dr who really cares for my needs as his patient. It has been a tough road . I can now honestly say the road I travel now as a pain patient is much smoother and manageable. Thank you Dr v and NYU.
Since Spondylosis is a degenerative disease there is no cure. However, this condition is highly treatable and rarely requires any invasive surgeries. Treatment for Spondylosis falls under various categories such as medication, physical therapy, exercise, and depending on the severity, steroid injections or surgery. Some treatment options include:
Medication such as anti-inflammatories, pain medications, and muscle relaxers can highly benefit symptoms and offer relief to sufferers.
Physical Therapy is a great way to prevent uncomfortable flare ups and manage symptoms. This treatment option is used to encourage mobility and movement, decrease pain, restore function and prevent disability in patients with injuries or impairments.* Our head physical therapist Michael Friar, D.P.T. will work closely with you to develop treatment options, proper exercises you may complete at our location, and some you can implement into your daily routine.
Aside from surgery, an epidural steroid injection or a facet joint injection can help manage acute pain and a possible option aside from surgery. Once you have a consultation with your doctor, you can communicate the best possible option for your symptoms.
It’s important to note most sufferers of Spondylosis do not require surgery, and this is typically a last resort. In the case that treatment doesn’t respond well it’s important to note factors such as health and medical history are essential in determining if this is your best option. Check out our surgeries to read up on procedures we offer for Spondylosis such as a Laminectomy.
In response to your treatment, a NYSI will schedule a follow-up to monitor progress or possible other available treatment options. It’s important to understand Spondylosis is irreversible, these treatment options are available to relieve symptoms and improve patient’s quality of life.
