Whiplash

Whiplash occurs when you are forced to move your neck back and forth in a fast pattern, typically as a result of having a lot of force thrust upon you in a short amount of time. While there are a multitude of problems that can come in the immediate aftermath of suffering from whiplash, it’s possible to recover issues associated with this neck injury.*

At the New York Spine Institute, we have several offices in greater New York City, Long Island, White Plains and Newburgh, NY. To see one of our spine specialists, please schedule a consultation with us today.

Understanding the Causes Of Whiplash

Whiplash is a neck injury that is due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, and it’s most commonly caused by rear-end car accidents.

The symptoms of whiplash normally develop within a few days of the injury. They can include:

  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Increased pain when you move your neck
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the shoulder, upper arm or back
  • Fatigue or dizziness

Diagnosing Your Whiplash

After experiencing a car accident or other traumatic injury, it’s always good to visit your doctor to rule out broken bones, concussions or other symptoms that can worsen over time. For some who experience whiplash, it can resolve within a few weeks. For others, continuous pain can go on for several months or years after the injury has happened.*

Normally, during a physical exam, a physician will test the range of motion in your neck and upper back area before ordering an imaging test. You may be asked about how severe your symptoms are and how often they occur. Some of the imaging tests that can be used to diagnose whiplash can be*:

  • X-Rays
  • CT Scan
  • MRI

Treatment Options For Whiplash

Whiplash can usually be treated without invasive surgical measures, and typically just take a few non-invasive treatments to provide you with relief. Some of these treatment options can include:

  • Pain Management: You can meet with a pain management specialist to determine the best plan of action for your recovery. Your physician may recommend rest, over-the-counter pain medication or injections as needed.*
  • Physical Therapy: A PT can help develop a plan to help increase your range of mobility and stretch your neck.

*The effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment will vary by patient and condition. New York Spine Institute does not guarantee certain results.
