Understanding the Causes Of Knee Arthritis

The most common type of knee arthritis, known as osteoarthritis, is caused by inflammation to the knee joint, which in turn breaks down cartilage tissue. Cartilage tissue acts to reduce friction in joints, and the lack of it can cause pain during movement. Arthritis develops over time, and symptoms are known to increase in substantiality.

Symptoms include:

  • Stiffness or swelling in the knee
  • Knee locking, cracking, or creaking during movement
  • Pain or weakness in knee
  • Pain flares after high levels of activity

Diagnosing Your Knee Arthritis

Often, diagnosis can be made through a range of physical tests. As well, imaging tests can help confirm a diagnosis. As well, laboratory blood tests can help determine what type of arthritis you have.

Testing for knee arthritis includes:

  • Physical examination
  • X Rays
  • CT scan
  • Laboratory blood test

Treatment Options For Knee Arthritis

There are many treatments to help deal with knee arthritis. Commonly, physical therapy and assistive devices are used as a countermeasure. There are also a range of surgeries available depending on the severity of the injury.

Treatments include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Use of an assistive device
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Surgical procedures

*The effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment will vary by patient and condition. New York Spine Institute does not guarantee certain results.
