MISS systems like ExcelsiusGPS® utilize a specialized 360-degree navigation system that offers a live feed of the surgical area and retractors to create a precise pathway to the area of the spine that needs treatment. 

How Is Robotic Technology Implemented?

The New York Spine Institute utilizes robotic technology from Globus Medical. The ExcelsiusGPS® employs X-ray images to map out the route that a rigid robotic arm must navigate. The GPS system guides the arm to the specific spinal area that needs attention. A Globus spine robot offers real-time feedback during the procedure, allowing surgeons to perform tasks accurately. Globus robotic spine surgery enhances precision and streamlines the process. 

What Types of Procedures Does MISS Perform? 

There are several types of robotic spine surgery, as there are many minimally invasive surgery techniques. Common procedures include: 

  • Placing screws and rods: A surgeon utilizes guidewires that are strategically placed using X-rays to guide screws to the spinal column. The surgeon then inserts rods and screws to stabilize the spine and removes the guidewires when the screws are in place. 
  • Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion: During this procedure, the surgeon inserts multiple screws in the vertebrae. The surgeon will remove any damaged disc, add bone material and fuse it to the existing bone for spine stability and pain relief. 
  • Discectomy: When the soft tissue between discs pushes out and irritates nearby nerves, you can experience pain in your arms and legs. Your surgeon can remove these discs, referred to as herniated discs, with robotic spine surgery. 
  • Spinal decompression: This procedure removes pieces of bone to alleviate pressure on the spinal nerves.
