What Is a Herniated Disc?
A herniated disc—also called a slipped or ruptured disc—occurs when the inner gel-like core of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in the outer layer. This protrusion can press on nearby nerves, causing inflammation and pain that may affect your back, limbs, or mobility.
Common symptoms include:
- Lower back or neck pain
- Sciatica (leg pain radiating from the lower back)
- Arm or shoulder pain
- Tingling or numbness in the extremities
- Muscle weakness or balance issues
Herniated discs most frequently occur in the lumbar spine (lower back) or cervical spine (neck), and symptoms can range from mild discomfort to debilitating pain.
