Understanding the Causes Of Your Bursitis

Bursitis is usually caused by an injury or a trauma to the affected area, or pressure on a specific area by overuse of a joint. The most common causes of bursitis are repetition of movements or positions that put pressure on the bursae around the joint. Some of the high-risk activities include:

  • Gardening
  • Raking
  • Carpentry
  • Shoveling
  • Painting
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Throwing a baseball
  • Leaning on your elbows for an extended amount of time

Diagnosing Your Bursitis

Doctors can often give a proper diagnosis of bursitis just based on medical history and by performing a physical exam, checking for any swelling or inflammation around the joints and areas that are causing discomfort and pain. However, if there is a need for further testing to diagnose bursitis these tests might include imaging tests or X-ray images to help understand the causes of pain, or lab tests to analyze the fluid from the inflamed bursae to exactly pinpoint the cause of joint inflammation.

To properly diagnose bursitis and to determine a treatment plan that is appropriate for your specific condition, seeking professional care is the most effective way to begin relieving any symptoms.*

Treatment Options For Bursitis

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR BURSITIS
Bursitis typically gets better on its own overtime and with the proper amount of rest, but recurring flare-ups are common, in which case other treatment options may be helpful. The various other treatment methods for bursitis relief may include:

  • Medication: if inflammation of your bursae if caused by an infection, it is possible your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic

  • Therapy: physical therapy can strengthen the muscles and ease the pain to prevent recurrence
  • Injections: A corticosteroid drug injection into the bursae may quickly relieve any serious pain and reduce inflammation in the affected area
  • Surgery: it is very rare, but in some cases it may be necessary to surgically drain the inflamed bursae to relieve any severe inflammation and pain from the affected area

*The effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment varies from patient to patient and depending on your specific condition. The New York City Spine Institute does not guarantee certain results.
