What Is a Foraminotomy?
A foraminotomy is a precise spinal surgery that widens the foramen—the small openings where spinal nerves exit the spinal canal. These passageways can narrow due to:
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Arthritis and bone spurs
- Spinal stenosis or aging-related changes
This narrowing (foraminal stenosis) can compress spinal nerves and lead to:
- Radiating leg or arm pain (sciatica or cervical radiculopathy)
- Numbness and tingling
- Muscle weakness or loss of coordination
- Difficulty walking or gripping objects
A foraminotomy removes the bone or disc material causing compression, decompresses the nerve, and restores normal function.
