What Is a Laminectomy?
A laminectomy is a form of spinal decompression surgery that removes part of the vertebral bone (the lamina) to relieve pressure on spinal nerves. This procedure is typically recommended when non-surgical treatments—like physical therapy or injections—have not resolved your symptoms.
Laminectomy is often used to treat:
- Spinal stenosis
- Herniated or bulging discs
- Degenerative disc disease
- Spondylolisthesis (slipped vertebra)
- Nerve compression from bone spurs or arthritis
The goal is to alleviate pressure on the spinal nerves that cause radiating pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness—particularly in the legs or arms.
